Tuesday's Racing Tips (21st September)

1:20 Beverley - 

Interesting to see how Jame's Tate's Stylish Icon goes. This bay filly was fancied to go well at Goodwood on debut but a slow start didn't help and after showing pace dropped back to finish sixth. I'd expect this filly to show more in this banded race. Dropping back from 6f to 5f may be a positive although there is always a slight concern a horse may be outpaced. It is best to consider the trainer knows best as if they don't it doesn't give us mere mortals much hope. The major concern is a wide draw. It might not be a problem with experience on side but it is a stumbling block. From a statistical point of view, Stylish Icon has very good claims. However, these juveniles often either win or unplaced which suggests a straight win if betting. With odds about 4/1 it's a fair price if not overly generous. I'd be tempted to wait and see if this horse drifts at some point to get that little extra value. 

6:20 Newcastle - 

An interesting if not complicated race. Sea King steps up in distance. He's a battling type and ran a sterling race last time before paying the price for a 2f battle. An out and out galloper he may well appreciate this extended trip. I have an eye on Mark Johnston's Pons Aelius who did little on debut at Goodwood when making his debut at Class 2. It was a dire performance but I often say the worse a horse looks on debut the better they are. This colt is very well bred and may well bounce back. He was priced 9/2 on his debut and you can't imagine he was fancied in the betting for no reason. Added to that point, Johnston has given this horse a couple more Class 2 entries which suggests there is some ability. I think the betting will tell the score. If Pons Aelius has a real hope he is likely to be backed from bigger odds. I would say, if he is priced over 9/1 I would think it is a bad sign and leave well alone. Ideally, he will be substantially backed and fancied in the market. Time will tell. Unless you are betting on the exchanges I wouldn't take a punt. I will try to get double-figure odds (15) and hope the money comes. If not, I'd lay the bet and watch. 

Wednesday's 2yo Racing (11th August)

A bumper day of two-year-old races. 

It doesn't fill my heart with joy as I'm not keen on a busy day. However, that's what we have so I will simply mention a few horses of interest and next to no analysis. It's either one race with full analysis or a brief summary. 

1:30 Yarmouth - 

Brasil Power, held in some regard by George Boughey and in the familiar silks of powerful owner Amo Racing Limited. This £410,000 breeze-up purchase (where do these people get all their money from) should go well. 

1:55 Salisbury - 

Looking forward to seeing how Monitor goes today. I would be confident this colt has ability and held in some regard by the stable. However, this may be a tough contest with Poet ready to roll, Level Up showing an element of ability at Goodwood for Amanda Perrett (who doesn't have many juveniles) and even Kingofhell may have half a hope at giant odds. I am looking forward to Monitor though. 

2:30 Salisbury - 

Flying Secret, trained by Eve Johnson-Houghton is a potentially smart colt and would be of interest if touching each-way odds. 

2:50 Beverley - 

Thunder Legend must run a race here. Palmer doesn't send many two-year-olds to Beverley but when he does they usually go well.

5:45 Beverley Racing Tips (19th July)

A few two-year-old races today but I'll focus on this race as it looks more interesting than most. 

Five furlongs on good to firm going. Nine two-year-olds take part in this restricted maiden stakes. A mix of form horses and debutantes. 

Smullen was fancied to win on debut but disappointed when third or four at odds of 8/13. Kevin Ryan's charge ran much better next time out at Hamilton when stepping up to six furlongs. This son of Camacho, in the ownership of Mrs.J. Ryan, is stepping back to the minimum trip on this course with an uphill finish. He had a narrow loss last time but looks a straightforward horse who should run a race. As with everything betting, it's about finding value and I'm not so sure 6/4 is giving too much away. 

There has been a bit of money for Richard Fahey's Ionian Sea, who races in the familiar silks of the Richard Fahey Ebor Racing Club Ltd. On the exchanges, a few lucky punters got odds as big as 9/1, the price fluctuating to as low as 3/1. This bay gelding, a son of Ardad out of an unraced mare, cost £18,000 at the yearling sales. Fahey does well at this course and a horse to be respected and, presently, priced 9/2 with bookmakers.

Julie Camacho doesn't have a great number of two-year-olds but a capable trainer. *Enraged caught a few punter's attention when running on to finish fourth over course and distance just over two-weeks back. This daughter of Aardad is out of a three-time-winning mare. She cost £29,000 at the yearling sales. There has been money for this filly. She was slow away on that occasion and made headway to finish with some spirit. I would have slight concerns she will be outpaced early and run on. If this is true, she may well be much bigger odds in running and that could be an angle for those fancying the chances of this March foal. 

Nigel Tinkler's Prodigious Blue is half interesting. This bay gelding is a son of Bated Breath and a good-looking horse. He has shown ability on his last two starts and could well be a live contender here. Perhaps the biggest concern is dropping back in trip. In ways, I would rather him run over 6f. This first attempt at the minimum trip might be a positive. He's shown good pace. However, the difference between running over five and six furlong is quite marked. It could be the case Prodigious Blue is outpaced and you are relying on him finishing with gusto and making up lost ground. This is the problem with assessing this horse as the likes of Smullen are likely to lead and any advantage may be telling. He's been about 10/1 on the exchanges which is a fair price. 

Conclusion: There may not be too many who get involved here. Smullen is a straightforward horse and has a decent level of pace. Certainly enough to lead and may hold a decent advantage. It's difficult to assess Ionian Sea. Fahey does well at this course and his juveniles hold decent statistics when fancied on debut. Enraged looks to be well fancied in the betting. She may have improved for the experience and sit handy. I'd have concerns she could be outpaced and running on. She may be a different horse today but often what you see is what you get and if she's trailing the field and looking to catch up it might be a tall order. If betting, I would definitely bet in running. I have half an eye on Prodigious Blue who has set a decent level of ability for a race of this nature. I do have concerns about this five furlongs. At double-figure odds (exchanges) there may be some hope for an each way punt.

12:00 Beverley: Olivia Brend for Gay Kelleway (17th July)

It’s been a quiet time of late, even with the amount of 2-year-old races it’s been hard trying to find any trackers to add to a post. A quick update on a few trackers that have run the past week or so. The Charlie Appleby trained Declaring Love is a horse I had been waiting a while for and had a host of top entries last year but a long layoff was a worry. I thought she ran a nice race to finish second but was no match for easy and impressive winner Stunning Beauty who quickened up nicely. Fast Emma was an eye-catcher a few weeks back but took a huge drift at Ripon on Tuesd
ay and the writing was on the wall a furlong to go when fading badly. I wrote about the Ralph Beckett trained Zoffarelli a few weeks back, but he was declared a non-runner that day, hopefully, a few eagle-eyed readers noticed the Zoffany colt entered at Windsor on Monday. I was surprised to see him a 25/1 shot but definitely outrun them odds when making a promising debut to finish second to Zammani and should come on plenty for that run. 

12:00 Fri 17 July 2020 Beverley

A couple of trackers in this one first is Beechwood Donna who is owned by Ontoawinner and Mrs. J Ryan who had a winner with Star Of Emaraaty recently. The Kevin Ryan trained Hot Streak filly has an eye-catching pedigree and I will definitely be checking the market as Kevin Ryan has a decent win strike rate with 2yos under 9/2 on debut. Olivia Brend is a Sir Prancealot filly trained by Gay Kelleway who was a cheap purchase at the 2019 Silver Yearling Sale when purchased for £ 3,500. Thrown in at the deep end in the Betway Empress Fillies Listed race at Newmarket Olivia Brend stayed in the race until class showed a furlong to go and was left behind, I would like to think this drop-in class plus a run under her belt she will be more competitive here. 

13:10 Beverley 17 Jul 2020 

I was looking forward to Frankenstella last timeout and was hoping for a good run at Wolverhampton but looked a bit one-paced and disappointing, to be honest. The 480,000 euro purchase takes a significant step up in distance here and needs to show a lot more for the John Quinn team. 

19:55 Haydock 17 Jul 2020 

Future King is a Dark Angel colt for Saaed Bin Suroor who costs 300,000 gns as a yearling. Dam Relation Alexander is a half-sister to the talented Flaming Spear who won the first timeout as a 2-year-old. Looking at the stats Saaed has a good first timeout record with 3-year-olds. He won’t have it all his own way though with the Wiliam Haggas trained Cold Front hoping to break his duck after finishing second three times in his career so far. The form looks pretty good, to be honest after when finishing behind another Godolphin horse Man Of Promise the last timeout.

Deverell Takes A Trip To The Golden Mile (Plus Previews)

FRATERNITY LOOKS TO GET BACK ON TRACK. 

Tracker: Phantom Bride. 

Eight runners go to post in the Irish EBF Fillies' Novice Stakes. It's always a worry that one could drop out and I will only get two places. I had a bet on Phantom Bride last timeout and thought the Karl Burke filly was nailed on for a place until weakening dramatically the final furlong. It wasn't a bad performance to be honest and could have each-way claims in what looks a difficult race to access. Fraternity caught my eye first time out at Haydock in July. The Richard Fahey Zoffany filly is owned and bred by Sir Robert Ogden. Fraternity was slowly way at Haydock but came to win the race a furlong out but couldn't quite match the winner West End Girls pace. Make no mistake the winner that day is very highly regarded and has since won the Group 3 Solera Stakes at Newmarket. I think Richard Fahey and the punters were expecting a win second start as she was sent off 3/1 favourite at Doncaster. It looked like a step backwards after a promising first run but I am willing to give this chestnut filly another chance against what look a few unexposed types. A market check is needed and hopefully, all eight run and I can get an each-way price. 

20:15 Chelmsford City 31 Aug 2019: 

DEVERELL TAKES A TRIP TO THE GOLDEN MILE. 

Tracker: Trumpet Man. 

A few potentially unexposed nice horses and a few potentially nice newcomers in the Betsi Golden Mile Novice Stakes. Nine go to post. I Am going to take on the Charlie Appleby runner Sun Cuisine after what was a disappointing debut at Yarmouth a few weeks back. The 30/100 favourite was expected to win in a canter but could never land a blow in the five runner race. Interesting to see if the Medaglia d'Oro colt just needed the run or is just disappointing. The market should prove the clues to his chances. One positive is Charlie Appleby has won the last two runnings of the race. In 2017 the brilliant Old Persian won and last year Court Poet won. Trumpet Man is entered to run in a Class 2 race at Goodwood on Tuesday but runs here instead. A nice Godolphin bred colt for Mark Johnston. Interesting to see what the market make of this Golden Horn colt on debut. I will be taking a bit of a gamble that Deverell doesn't have any problems after a 101 absence. The John Gosden Kingman colt made his debut at Yarmouth way back on 22nd May. Looking very professional that day and cruising along for most of the way until disappointingly fading inside the final furlong. That wasn't a bad race to start off his career and the winner Maxi Boy has run at a decent level without winning. Maybe Deverell had a problem or just needed strengthening up but this is a significant step up in distance and I will be looking for an each-way price if available unless a big drift in the market. 

16:55 Lingfield 31 Aug 2019: 

Tracker: Rachmaninov for Hugo Palmer. 

Had a Class 2 Convivial entry at York but didn't run. Market check needed on debut.
