Three to Follow (Plus My June Review)

I can’t believe it’s nearly the end of June and the flat season is well and truly in full swing now which means loads of trackers and loads of bets compared to May. I will be showing my bets and results for June next week and at the minute I don't really want to work it out, to be honest. May was a great month when I was in profit by 34 pounds for a 1 pound level stake but June has been a bit hit-and-miss with some bad decisions and of course a bit of bad luck along the way. 

Pinatubo has been my main highlight for June. I picked him out for the last day of Ascot, and he was a much-needed win for what was a forgettable Royal Ascot in terms of betting, but a great meeting to watch and savour overall. Big City was another nice winner for my trackers and another much-needed win when things hadn't been going to plan. Lincoln Blue ran a great race for me, I backed him at 28/1 each way and thought he was going to win only to get beat a neck in the end. Lexi The One was an 18/1 third and Kuwait Direction was 9/1 and beaten a short head. Last but not least was Willa yesterday who I had an each way bet on at 14/1, she ran a great race to finish second to the easy winner Picture Frame. Horse racing is like a roller coaster it has its ups and downs and nothing is guaranteed especially with 2-year-olds. Let’s hope July is more like May and I can get a few more winners to keep the betting bank ticking over. 

A few horses I will be keeping an eye out for over the coming weeks are: 

Man Of The Night: This Richard Hannon trained Night Of Thunder colt should be out soon and it wouldn't surprise me to see this nicely bred horse contest some decent races this season. Purchased by owner Saeed Manana for 350,000 euros in August last year. The same connections have already had a debut winner this season with Man Of The Night's half-brother Wild Thunder who went off at a huge price of 10/1 when winning a Novice Stakes race at Goodwood in May. 

Galactic Glow: This William Jarvis trained No Nay Never colt was purchased for 160,000 gns in October last year by multiple racehorse owner Clive Washbourn. This bay colt must have been catching pigeons on the gallops because the opening show of 5/1 didn't last long and was soon backed down to 2/1 joint-favourite for his Maiden race at Doncaster in May. Galactic Glow made a pleasing debut when staying on in the final furlong to finish third. I will be looking forward to seeing him step up in trip and hopefully get a win on the board soon. 

Plymouth Rock: This John Quinn trained Starspangledbanner colt should be making his debut in the coming weeks if not days. Purchased by Tabor, Smith, Magnier and Shanahan for 220,000 gns in April this year. Plymouth Rock has an excellent pedigree and I will be disappointed if he can’t pick up a nice race in the future.

How Mick Channon Loves A Seller (Plus weekend Reviews and Previews)

When it comes to 2-year-old selling stakes races there is only one trainer to look out for. Mick Channon has a great record in these type of races, you only have to look at the Goodwood 15.05 today which he has won the past 3 years, yes my tracker Sir Gordon came out second best in a battle to the line with the David Evans trained Shani but despite a slow start and losing a good few lengths he ran a great race until tiring and getting beat a neck. I had an each way bet so not much damage done. 

Over the past four seasons with 2-year-olds running over 5 furlongs would have given you a 50 percent strike rate from 12 bets and a 1.55.5 percent return at starting price and today was close to making it a perfect 4/4 at Goodwood, so next time you see a selling race and think it’s just a poor race take a look at Mick Channon's horses because there could be money to be made.

Weekend Reviews:

It’s been a case of hitting the bar this weekend for me. I had six trackers running over the weekend and all got placed, I know everybody says it but I think I was unlucky with the three bets I had. First a few thoughts on the trackers I didn’t do. My first thought was that Ottoman Court was disappointing but the front two pulled 10-lengths clear of the field in a 6-furlong race, maybe the Mark Johnston trained Visinari could be useful, we will see. Silver Start ran an average race to finish third but no bet. 

I had two trackers in the same race at Lingfield evening meeting on Saturday, Ocasio Cortez won easily in the end but no bet at the price, now Lexi The One I did have a bet on and boy am glad I didn’t take an early price (no best odds for this race in BetFred), she was 9/2 the night before when I backed her and I had all but given up hope of getting any money back after drifting to 18/1 on the off, slowly away for the third time this season I almost threw my betting slip in the bin until the commentator on the radio to my relief said and from the back Lexi The One gets up for third, phew thank god Sean Davis rode all the way to the line.

Moon Of Love was another hard luck story for me. The Hilary Needler Trophy Fillies' Conditions Stakes is a tough race to win but Cool Silk Partnership do like to win it, Moon Of Love broke smartly looking professional from the off, I would say she was about to take the lead just over a furlong out until being bumped and hitting the rails, it’s a miracle she stayed on her feet never mind get back into the race to finish third place, credit goes to jockey Barry McHugh who never gave up and more place money back for what was an eventful betting weekend. 

Saturday Trixie Review:

No luck again but Aaron popped up with another winner Safe Voyage (5/4), Moon Of Love ran a great race to finish third for me and Sam's selection Stake Aclaim was disappointing. We might try a Trixie each day for Royal Ascot, you never know Sam might get a winner the more we do but don’t hold me to that.

Could Lexi Be the One? (Plus Reviews,Previews and Tips)

All good things must come to an end. May was an amazing month for me when I felt every 2-year-old horse tracker I backed would either win or place and often did. June seems to be the opposite way around at the minute and confidence is low. In my last post, I detailed my May bets and to a £1 stake I was £34 in profit, I won't reveal how much I put on just in case the Mrs actually reads one of my posts which is very unlikely, to be honest. I think everyone must go through bad spells and hopefully, lady luck will be back on my side just as quick as she deserted me. 

Right here we go, Wednesdays review, this is a few lines I wrote in my last post just a few days ago about the Cool Silk Partnership horses that I would be following: 

Next is Flaming Princess, this Hot Streak filly who is trained by Richard Fahey and was bought for £60,000 at the Tattersalls sales back in April and is entered to run in the same race as Moon of Love. 

Because I was working early this week I checked the betting the night before and Flaming Princess was 12/1, so I thought I would leave it and check again on my break in the morning. To my surprise, she was a 33/1 shot, so I thought the market drift must mean she probably wouldn't be winning today so it was a no bet for me. I put the race on at 12.00, Ffs she was backed into 12/1 and of course, the rest is history she won well and the second-placed Al Raya looks a horse that will be winning sooner rather than later.

Am not going to lie it put me in a bad mood for the rest of the day and to make matters worse I backed my trackers Taste The Nectar and the expensive Tuk Power, not sure which was the worst, to be honest, but both finished down the field. I also mentioned a few trackers for Thursday in my last post, Dubai Station won and the other tracker I had in the same race Partridge came second. Finally, Praxeology also won at short odds but no bets for me.

15:20 Newmarket 08 Jun 2019: Ottoman Court runs for Charlie Appleby and had a Class 2 entry at York but didn’t run. This Shamardal Colt made his debut at Nottingham last month, the well-backed 4/9 favourite was slowly away and never involved. Interestingly he was given an entry for the Group 2 Railway Stakes after that debut which makes me think he will show a much-improved performance today 

19:15 Lingfield 08 Jun 2019: Lexi The One made her debut in the Class 2 Lily Agnes Stakes at Chester, not fancied on her debut she dwelt and was never involved, next race at Chelmsford she got into trouble again but a recent Class 2 race entry at Chester which she didn't take up gives me hope I will see some improvement today. 

19:15 Lingfield 08 Jun 2019: Ocasio Cortez had a Class 2 entry in April but didn’t run, no significant entries since. 

19:00 Chepstow 08 Jun 2019: Silver Start ran in the Marygate Listed race at York but finished down the field, extra weight to burden today but must have a chance in this lower grade. 

14:00 Beverley 08 Jun 2019: I can't finish without mentioning Moon Of Love for Richard Fahey and the Cool Silk Partnership, this is a tough race, to be honest, but Richard Fahey won it last year with Kodyanna. The 130,000 filly will have to be fit and ready to go, so a market check will be needed. 

15:05 Goodwood 09 Jun 2019: Sir Gordon runs for the Mick Channon stable who has won this race the last 3 years, was entered for the Brocklesby but never ran. 

The Saturday Trixie: 

Week 2: 

Aaron: Safe Voyage 3:35 Haydock - Course and distance who is 3/3 at Haydock most recently beating Mankib by 1 1/4 lengths a couple of weeks ago and should go well again. 

Sam: 3:00 Haydock - Stake A Claim - Won nicely on season return. The rain is welcomed as the best form is in the mud. Will look to make all in this tricky contest and should be up to the mark. 

Craig: 14:00 Beverley - Moon Of Love - for Richard Fahey and the Cool Silk Partnership, this is a tough race, to be honest, but Richard Fahey won it last year with Kodyanna. The 130,000 filly will have to be fit and ready to go, so a market check will be needed.
