Saturday Racing Update (16th July)

I don't get many days like the past two I can tell you, my first bet was Thursday when I backed the Joseph O'Brien trained Montesilvano at 9s. I'm never confident about a horse but was pretty sure Montesilvano could grab a place at least. The funny thing was I was that busy doing other stuff I forgot about the race until the last minute. The Holy Roman Emperor colt was in the lead as soon as I put the race on, yes definitely placed I thought as he was staying on the final furlong, to be honest he kept going and never looked like being beat, what a price as Monte ended up winning 11/2, it was also nice to have a winner for a change after seconds galore lately.

Friday I wrote on my Twitter that the Owen Burrows trained Tarjeeh looked a nice each way bet at 8s but would be more confident if support came for the Churchill colt, I'd taken 8s but watched as the money did come eventually. I watched the race at work and was confident as he started 7/2. Jim Crowley is a great jockey and I always feel confident when he's on one of my fancies. Tarjeeh was away and Jim was sitting quietly, I could see him making ground up as my tracker Bresson took the lead, it wasn't instant from Tarjeeh but Jim Crowley had a good rhythm going and stayed on well to win comfortably in the end, fantastic! Two nice winners and happy days.

My other trackers included Silver Knott who will be better for the run after finishing fourth, Trillium won nicely for Richard Hannon but no bet at the price. I did have a few quid each way on my other tracker Tantalus who ran a great race to get placed at Haydock. I think you know your luck is in when you back a tracker from last year and she wins 11/1, the horse was the Karl Burke trained Breaking Light who I'd given last year but disappointed. A wind op and first time in a handicap showed why she was well regarded last year.

Right onto my next trackers, I'm a bit late writing this and a few prices are gone already.

18.15 Doncaster

Royal Dress has been involved in two decent races, I will forgive the debut run as wasn't given a hard time. Royal Dress ran at Newmarket last timeout when sent off 11/2 from 8s. Pat Dobbs kept her towards the back cruising until no room to get through then running on all too late, I'm pretty sure she would have been involved in the finish. I think that was a pretty decent race and I would be disappointed if she couldn't get involved here, around 11/4.

19.00 Haydock

I do have the favourite Killybegs Warrior and Lord Uhtred as trackers here and both short in the betting. Particularly looking forward to Lord Uhtred who was pretty green at Yarmouth when third and staying on. Derek Thompson did give the Siyouni colt a good mention before the race so that jinxed that ha. Hopefully the Charlie Hills colt can make his mark here, was 2s.

13.42 Newmarket

No tracker this but I thought American Belle ran a sound debut for James Fanshawe and owner Fred Archer Racing, I always look out for this combination as they pop up with a nice one now and again. It looked like a professional debut at Doncaster to me when not given a hard time when finishing third to Ibiza Love who finished down the field in the Albany Stakes. Another short one at 3s.

14:26 Ripon

Arnie Angell for trainer David Brown, no bet on debut for me .

Thanks for reading and good luck.

A Quick Review Latest Trackers & Bets (30th April)

Quick review of latest trackers and bets.

Celestial Star for Keith Dalgleish ran with credit at Ayr this week. On my radar as a 2yo after being given a significant entry last season. Not quite the same price as last week's 66/1 shot Graceland's Girl but 25s was good enough for me the night before. I thought she could sneak a place here in what looked like a four horse race with a few making up the numbers. I was right in the end just a shame Celestial Star could only manage fourth. ❎

I didn't have a bet on my next tracker Emily Dickinson over in Naas as the Aidan O'Brien filly was too short, I've been banging on about her for a while now as I have her as an ante-post bet for the Oaks. It's fair to say this ride was timed to perfection by Ryan Moore, he has his critics but never panicked and in the end I would say won a shade cosily. My 100/1 looks alright now as they have cut her odds to 25s, I'm not sure she will even run yet but I'm hopeful at least. ✅

I did have a win bet on the Karl Burke trained Breaking Light who I thought could give the favourite a run for her money at Ayr. A pretty disappointing performance to be honest as she faded quickly, it did say in the Racing Post she ran without a front shoe but I'm not sure I can use that as an excuse to be honest.❎

Jason Coote wrote an excellent guest post for the blog, if I could learn half the stuff he knows about 2yo racing I will be a happy man. One horse he gave a favourable mention to was the John Butler trained Confederation. I must admit I did review this race hoping to find a bet and checked Confederation out and gave him no hope after trailing in last in the Brocklesby. The 33/1 shot looked a different horse this time out when finishing second and would have been a lovely each way bet. It does show you that we should never underestimate how much these 2yos can improve after only one run. ✅

Another bet I had was Lost Angel for Clive Cox at Nottingham. I wasn't going to have a bet as it looked like a difficult race to get a positive angle on. It was a bit of an impulse bet really, I do like a second time out runners and Lost Angel ran a decent race on debut at Newmarket when third to Powerdress, watching the replay the Dark Angel filly was staying on but just tapped for toe the final furlong also Clive Cox has a decent strike rate at Nottingham. A price boost to 13/2 made my mind up and the each way bet was on. Liam Keniry gave her a lovely ride (always is when they win) and Lost Angel just did enough to win by half a length. It's been a frustrating April with too many win bets on debutantes but this keeps me close to level for the month, hopefully I can sneak a win tomorrow in a tough day's racing. ✅

Trackers:

14:10 Goodwood 30 April

I'm hoping it's third time lucky for my 3yo tracker Chef De Partie. The Siyouni colt  still looks green as hell to me after two runs which is a slight worry, I'm pretty sure he is better than his last performance when kept at the back by Hollie Doyle before making late progress. Chef De Partie did hang slightly and Hollie done well to keep him on a straight line in the end but the impressive winner Morghom had well flown and Chef De Partie finished a decent sixth considering the circumstances. Hopefully get an each way price here.

15.55 Thirsk 30 April

Graceland's Girl is back out after an eye-catching debut at Catterick ten days ago. A few big trainers turn up here but I'm hoping David Allan has this Tim Easterby Iffraaj filly in the perfect position to take this maiden. A little far back on debut Graceland's Girl made giant strides to get close to Beluga Gold and was staying on at the death. I'm hoping an each way price is available.

Previews & Reviews (April 25 2022)

Quick review of Saturday's post.

As I mentioned In my last post I had two trackers in the 13.45 at Ripon and in the end I did Honour Your Dreams each way at 5s, some people may not agree that 5s is a each way bet but it works for me. The early favourite was drifting which is always a good sign and Honour Your Dreams was backed into 7/2, I watched the race on the way home in a taxi from shopping, one day I might be able to relax and watch it from my own home, of course the driver was waffling on as they always do while I'm looking at my phone thinking shut up for a minute. Honour Your Dreams broke well today, quick off the mark this time and up with the pace, going well and took it up a furlong to go, despite hanging a bit he bagged the rail, cmon my son but The Twilight Lady come out the pack and won by a short head, nothing lost so it was good to get my stake back. ✅

Newfoundland was the next tracker at Navan, a no bet because who knows what horse will turn up, a good decision as stablemate Arbutus beat Newfoundland on his debut race, say no more.

Previews.

16.30 Ayr 25 April

Ten 3yos declared here in what looks a formality for the William Haggas trained Post Impressionist after a good second at Nottingham a few weeks ago. Mark Johnston has the Golden Horn colt Dubai Leader who could be nice. I'm going to try a speculative small each way on Celestial Star for Keith Dalgleish who won this race last year with Summa Peto. It's a long shot and a half after finishing eighth last year at this course. The Ribchester filly was up with the pace going well but faded pretty quickly when the going got tough. I mean it wasn't the best run and wouldn't surprise me if she headed to handicaps this season but I'm willing to take a chance she can grab a place here, currently around 33s.

18:45 Naas 25 April

A race I won't be getting involved in but I do have the Aidan O'Brien filly Emily Dickinson as a tracker. I'm sure regular readers know by now that these O'Brien horses could be anything. Emily has had a couple of nice runs to date and I'm hopeful she will put her best foot forward today because I have the Dubawi filly as a outside bet for the Oaks, I mean I need a good performance here to be honest or the slip goes well and truly in the bin. A few nice types in this race including the other O'Brien runner Champagne, currently around 6/4 for Emily Dickinson.

19.25 Ayr April 26

Breaking Light for the Karl Burke team runs here after finishing second over this course and distance last August, the Dabirsim filly was unfancied on debut but still managed a decent run. Well regarded by Karl Burke last year so interested to see how this 182,000 euro purchase gets on here against the likely favourite Espresso. A possible bet if I can get an each way price which is probably a bit optimistic of me.

Saturday's Previews & Reviews (23rd April)

Quick review of my last post and bets.

First off was the Eve Johnson Houghton colt Blatant who had one run already in the Brocklesby when finishing down the field after being a touch keen. I managed to grab 3s early in the morning and was pleased to see the money come.

The favourites flip flopped as the Gay Kelleway runner who won on debut drited like a leg had fell off. Ocean Cloud with the experience was quickly out the blocks, Blatant looked more experienced himself today following behind but even with the penalty Ocean Cloud looked like never stopping as Blatant finished second, could be useful this winner. ❎

Next bet was the David Evans runner Soleil Blanc, another win bet, the confidence is shot at this point as the search for a winner continued, it was another race nothing went right, one was withdrawn then Soleil Blanc didn't want to go in the stalls, ah I was thinking of just cashing out at this stage as I knew my fate, Soleil Blanc reared up leaving the stalls and lost a few lengths so game over as she never got involved at all ❎

Now for the one we've all been waiting for Graceland's Girl who I had as a tracker last year for Tim Easterby, lots of negatives before the race, the trainers fto record, the price of course, fuck it you have to be in it to win it I thought so the night before I had a small each way at 50/1 and went to bed dreaming about the Iffraaj filly winning (actually true story).

Next morning I was watching the betting and thought I would see some support but no she drifted out, that's it I thought no chance, next I seen was 80s, then I checked again and into 33s, mmm interesting hey so I went in again, anyway before the race she went off 66s.

The race started as I watched on the bus home from work, I was still weirdly optimistic that she could grab a place. Graceland's Girl started alright to be fair, even though at the back was actually travelling well for a debutante, no signs of being keen but just relaxed, the favourite was serving it up to the field and getting a nice lead, Fentiman started to move up on Graceland's Girl taking them one by one, c'mon you beauty as she started to stay on well, next minute she was making giant strides but the line was coming, c'mon grab a place I thought, yes she moved into third and in fact I'm no jockey but an early move would have seen her win here but I was well pleased and got a few quid back in what has been a terrible month ✅

Just a few trackers tomorrow and no time to write much.

13.45 Ripon

We have a hot favourite at the time of writing, Insolente ran well on debut in a race that's turning out well. Jaxta was favourite on debut for O'Meara but faded quickly, interesting that he was favourite and needs a market check tomorrow. Two trackers I have are Kings Crown and Honour Your Dreams who came second and third last time to a nice Alice Haynes horse called Fix You. I've taken 5s each way but possible cash out of drifting, both are interesting, maybe I should have done a split stake or I might still.

17.55 Navan

Not going near this tracker to be honest I'm done with Aidan O'Brien horses, actually I would love to see Newfoundland win here but my money stays in my pocket, the 9/4 could be a great price after the race.

Early entry

19.25 Ayr April 26

Breaking Light for Karl Burke, short I imagine but well regarded last season.
