A Boom For Zoom (13:05 Lingfield 02 Dec 2020)

It’s always worth looking into statistics if you get the time and as it showed in my last post as they proved spot on again when my Mark Johnston fancy RENBAWI who drifted like a leg had fallen off trailed in second to last. Mark Johnson’s record with second time out winning two-year-olds priced over 10s is pretty low so when drifting to 14s was a definite no bet for me. I have to say my newcomer to note didn’t do much at all on debut. The Haggas trained ALTO VOLANTE was backed like defeat was out the question and ended up 8/11 but ran no race at all, could be worth checking out next timeout and may even get a better price after that poor showing.

Not sure how many 2-year-old races are left this season as my head is up the wall with getting ready for next season but hopefully I can get a much-needed winner before it does end. Hugo Palmer did have a nice winner at Newcastle today called Oz Legend, and he has another nice looking horse here called Ocean Road who I’m sure will be pretty well-supported after a decent debut when second to Noon Star last timeout. The Qatar Racing owned Australia filly should come on plenty but probably be a warm order here. I will be taking a chance on a Roger Varian filly called ZOOMA and hoping she can sneak a place at least. The Exceed and Excel filly cost 50,000 gns at the Tattersalls 2019 October Yearling Sales and has already run twice this season for a team in form. Zooma made her debut in a hot class 2 event at Goodwood back in July when easy to back. The 14/1 shot was actually pulled up soon after when something went amiss. Roger Varian gave her a break, and she was out again at the end of October at Kempton when kept towards the rear before staying on steadily but never threatening the leaders. Nibbled at that day from 13/2 into 11/2 at the off I’m hopeful the extra distance will see her in a better light tomorrow and if priced under 15/2 tomorrow Zooma has decent place claims.

The early race looks a tough one and a newcomer to note is the Roger Charlton trained WANNABE SAFE who comes from a decent family and is half-sister to the useful Wannabe Yours and Wannabe Loved, I won’t be backing on debut but will have a small each way on what could be a speculative outsider in the name of BLUE ARTEMIS. I could be way of\f the mark here so that’s why I will keep it a small stake. Blue Artemis was a 72,000 gns purchase and trained by James Fanshawe and owned by Fred Archer Racing, I do like it when they team up, and they have had a few winners in the past. The stats don’t really give me much clue here as Fanshawe can win at speculative odds or short. The Showcasing filly was 66/1 on debut and never involved but stranger things have happened but as I say small stake for me here.

Wednesday 2yo Previews Plus An Eye-Catcher To Follow

I have officially put myself on the cold list after a series of placed efforts and losers. The betting bank has taken a knock in recent weeks I can tell you but the only thing stopping me from crying is I’m still in profit from a few nice winners early on in the season. What am I doing differently? That's the question. The answer I can’t explain until the 2-year-old season finishes and I can take a look at things closely. One thing I will be adding next season is a few more unraced horses to follow as the season goes along, backing on debut is a risky business so could be worth watching and backing second time out if running well on debut. 

One debut runner I mentioned on Twitter last week was SEA LA ROSA for the William Haggas yard. The Sea The Stars filly was purchased for € 200,000 at the Arqana 2019 August Yearling Sales and is owned by Sunderland Holding Inc. I did have a small each way at 6s and had already written her off when she drifted to 12s about 45 minutes before the race but suddenly the money came and by race time Sea La Rosa was 7/2. Marquand kept her at the back for most of the race but when the penny dropped Sea La Rosa stayed on nicely towards the end of the race and managed to finish fourth. One to look out for next time but I Imagine not much of a price. 

NEWCOMER TO NOTE: ALTO VOLANTE

I did have this Kingman colt down as a John Gosden horse to follow in a post I did back in February so not to sure what happened as William Haggas has him now, anyway owned by Mr A E Oppenheimer who also has a nice Kingman colt called MEGALLAN who won first timeout for John Gosden and ran at a decent level this season. Alto Volantes Dam Disco Volante has produced some nice offspring including the 112 rated Namibian and the Haggas trained Golden Horn filly Domino Darling who won first timeout. This looks a nice starting point here and whatever Alto Volante does I’m sure he will come on plenty for the run.

The second division also looks a nice race and with no Appleby runner I could have a chance here of getting a place at least. The one I have my eye on is the Mark Johnston trained RENBAWI who I thought ran a decent race first timeout at Wolverhampton just over a week ago when finishing eighth. Renbawi was steady in the market that day opening up 5s and going off 9/2, despite being slowly away the Dubawi colt looked professional enough and knew his job. Silvestre De Sousa never gave Renbawi a hard time and despite coming wide on a couple of the bends it looked to me like he was eased down the last furlong when no chance of challenging. Renbawi is a half-brother to the Mark Johnston trained Meraas who ran at a decent level and a full-brother to the Godolphin trained Global Hero who won over this distance at Wolverhampton. Johnston has decent win and place claims with second timeout runners 9/2 and under so with a bit of look Renbawi can improve for his debut run, a negative if drifting over them odds.
