Weekend Selections from the In It To Win It Team (18th February)

I can't believe it, our first weekend lucky 15 and it went to the final selection for the full house, and who had the last selection? Me of course.

@prohorseracing started the ball rolling with Healing Power who had drifted out to 7s, I have to say it's the first I've seen of jockey Elle-May Croot but she gave Healing Power a great ride from the front and wasn't to be caught, get in! first one up and a great start.

Next was @TicTacRacing who liked Tone The Barone and the seven-year-old was steadily back through the day. Another winner and again never in doubt, two winners out of two as Tone The Barone won easily at 7/2 after being a lot bigger in the morning markets.

@Equinefutures next up with Johnny Boom who was back down to class 6 company and with Probert in the hot seat I was confident we could add another, wow another easy winner as he quickened clear to slaughter the opposition, the reality hit as we had one left for a full house.

@craignewton175

It was all going so well, I went for Crown Land hoping the George Boughey filly would be backed but it went the opposite way and she ended up 14s so I pretty much knew the outcome, after the event I wondered why I didn't take a nice cash out but we are In It To Win It so I stuck with her, when you hear slowly away normally that's it especially with debutants and so it was as she trailed in second to last, things can only get better from a personal view but what a start that was for the team, three winners out of four and went to the wire.

See last week's blog post here.

Week two:

@CraigNewton175

13.38 Lingfield INTERGALACTICAT (Ew) 8/1 5th

This looks like it could go the way of previous winner Floating Spirit who looks a nice filly for the Andrew Balding yard after winning on debut at Kempton so I'll be looking for something to sneak a place with what I have left. I do have Margaret's Fuchsia as a tracker from last season, but hasn't been seen for 266 days after finishing third on debut at Chelmsford, significantly up in trip here. Betting should tell the story with the Hughes and Haggas newcomers. I'm going to take a gamble with the Fanshawe Bobby's Kitten colt Intergalacticat each way. It's not a confident choice by any stretch of the imagination but as the 2yos haven't started yet this is good as it gets. Owners Fred Archer Racing have had a few winners with Fanshawe and are always worth looking out for. Bought for 27,000 gns at the Tatts Sales in 2021 the bay colt has already had three unplaced runs and the last one at Southwell was pretty interesting when seemingly travelling strongly but never getting involved. An enquiry into the running was held and it was found the colt had lost a shoe and slightly lame, plus the jockey stated he tried his best to obtain the best possible place, if the newcomers aren't up to much I'm hopeful Intergalacticat can sneak a place here against the hotpot who could be above average.

18.00 Newcastle GIFTED GOLD 12/1 5th

Also a horse I am tracking and backed LTO when a disappointing favourite at 3/1. Look at the bare basics and it's easy to have reservations. It does not tell the whole story if you look deeper.

First of all, she is very keen early on and could be called ‘green’ to a certain extent. She is then asked for her effort and responds when turning in, only to be badly hampered on the inside. I mean as badly as I have seen for some time. Snatched up and did not recover.

It's very easy to put a line through this. The fact she has gone off 3/1f tells you they expect her to progress from her mark. That makes a 2lb drop from the handicapper seem even the more generous. She was deemed good enough to contest the Oh So Sharp stakes on just her 2nd start last year and this will be only her 5th start so more is to come no doubt.

She gets 1st time cheekpieces here and that could aid her to do more early on. This looks a race to take by the scruff of the neck and feel the jockey should just keep it simple and go. She has won at the course which is another positive.

@prohorseracing

Newcastle 17.30 LADY BIANCA 7/2 4th

Favourite Magicdollar is worth taking on given she hasn't been overly impressive on speed ratings even for this grade. Handicap debutant Lady Bianca is an intriguing alternative, though.

The filly left a huge impression when she stayed on strongly last month at Wolverhampton over 7 furlongs. She was flat footed halfway through the race but finished the best of all over the last three furlongs for an excellent 2nd place in the end. The form warrants an upgrade because the winner was only 1½L beaten prior behind a horse now rated 87.

Lady Bianca's opening mark of 66 isn't a giveaway but could easily underestimate. She steps up to a more favourable distance as it's obvious she wants a greater test of stamina, which is no surprise given the pedigree. She will get it here, moving up in trip over a mile with the stiff finish at Newcastle sure to suit.

This class 6 contest looks an ideal opportunity to get off the mark. The only concern is the weight. She is a small April filly and has to carry 9-10. Class should prevail, though. She looks the three-year-old with the most upside in this field.

Lion’s D’ is Fav overnight & change to yard for Appleby’s is a +, FT HCP stats have tailed off the last 2 yrs, 4 months SLR so, fair to take on. Adeb could improve for the step up but I’m taking TITAN ROCK who confirmed coming to hand with an encouraging run at S’Well  LTO.

Winners, Winners,Winners for Trainer Quotes 2021

It’s been another great flat season and I for one won’t be resting on my laurels after another exciting season for craigsbettingblog. I will be hoping I can put more effort in next season and make it even better. I always love getting in touch with trainers and finding out about their new crop of 2-year-olds for the season ahead. Taking a look back at what horses they mentioned before they even set foot on the race course is always interesting.

Eve Johnson-Houghton kindly forwarded information about her 2021 crop as early as February and one stand out horse was the Havana Gold colt CHIPOTLE who gave owners the Woodway 20 an unbelievable season winning £139.000 in prize money. As mentioned in one of my recent posts the Brocklesby is normally a good indicator that the horse has some level of ability and it proved the case for Chipotle who made light work of the other eight runners and went on to win the Windsor Castle and finished the season in style winning the Listed William Hill Trophy at Redcar. NUVOLARI, another mentioned by Eve as one for the future, won first timeout at Epsom in September and could be worth following as a 3-year-old.

New trainer Edward Bethell, another who forward some invaluable information on his first crop of 2-year olds. Edward mentioned that FEARBY was an early straightforward type and he wasn’t wrong when an eye-catching fourth on debut in May before going on to win the Dragon Stakes and finishing an excellent second in the Molecomb Group 3 Stakes Goodwood bringing in a total of £93.000 in prize money. Young Winston, Reel Rosie and Exminister, another three who got wins on the board in what was an excellent first season for Edward.

Charlie Fellowes chipped in with ATRIUM who grabbed a couple of wins who Charlie described as a strong, nice well made colt.

George Scott, a trainer who always has time for the blog, gave MISTRIX as a horse to follow and the Vadamos filly won a nice class 3 Stakes race at York in September and might have more to come.

Karl Burke, one of my favourite 2-year-old trainers never disappoints and had good things to say about the Dandy Man gelding KORKER and described him as a sharp 2-year-old who moves very well. Korker finished second on debut then added three wins in a great season for owners Fine Claret and More Turf Racing. GIFTED GOLD another winner for Karl who won first timeout in September.

Marco Botti only mentioned a few but ODISSEO found his way the second part of the season. The £26.000 Ulysses colt took time to warm up and find his grade before winning two on the bounce and running his best race when stepping up a level last timeout.

James Tate always gives a winner or two with his horses to follow and this season it was the same again as HIGH VELOCITY followed his promising debut at Yarmouth with a cosy win at Chelmsford last timeout and definitely has more to come. EL HADEEYAH took a few attempts to break her duck but got off the mark at Lingfield in July.

AMAZONIAN DREAM had a great season for Rod Millman who finished second on his debut way back in April then went on to run with credit in a few tough races before finishing the season instyle winning back to back races at Newbury and Sandown and looks like a nice horse for the future.

I managed to get a few owners on board this season and I love the way owners Quantum Leap don’t rush horses. It was nice to see the Ralph Beckett trained SPEYCASTER win on his third start after being given a nice write-up here back in February by Niall O'Connor and another to look out for next season.

It was to get Qatar racing on board and they came up trumps with SUNSTRIKE who won second timeout for John Gosden then went on to run at group level and recent Hugo Palmer winner CUBAN BEAT another second timeout winner who looks a nice type going forward.

The 2022 season is still a good few months away but next year I will be working harder to bring the best 2-year-old information to my readers.

I would like to thank all my readers for making craigsbettingblog the place to go to for top 2-year-old information, without you my motivation would soon go.

Trainers' Talk 2-year-olds - Karl Burke

If you enjoy two-year-old horse racing, then Karl Burke has got to be one of your top trainers. Spigot Lodge, Coverham, Leyburn, North Yorkshire, has seen some exceptionally talented juveniles. Last year, saw Dandalla, in the ownership of Nick Bradley Racing 28 and Elaine Burke. Every inch a Group horse, she lengthened clear with an almost surreal demolition in the Albany Stakes (Group 3), followed up by a neck victory in the Duchess of Cambridge Stakes (Group 2), concluding a creditable effort in the Cheveley Park Stakes (Group 1).

Exciting times, and a real powerhouse to go to war with this new Flat turf season.

In addition, last year saw other talented two-year-olds including:  Sprite, She's So Nice, Rebel At Dawn & Spycatcher.

There will be lots of exciting two-year-olds to follow this season and here are a few to follow, kindly forwarded by Karl Burke.
