Rod Millman: 2yos for the Flat Turf Season 2021

I would like to thank James Millman for keeping us informed and very much appreciate him forwarding this post and interactions on Twitter which really add to ours as well as readers interest about two-year-old horse racing.

Rod Millman has always been a trainer I have admired. Like many within the training ranks he worked hard to get where he is today. Looking back to those early days he was a jockey with Reg Akehurst, a man who knew his sprinters (many fond memories of Reg).

Rod worked with many and varied trainers, learning his craft, and took out his dual-purpose trainer's licence in November 1989. His first winner, Royal Dartmouth, who went in at odds of 20/1.

In 2001, Whitbarrow gave the team their first pattern win in the Molecomb Stakes at Goodwood.

Many race fans will remember Hawridge Prince and the beloved Sergeant Cecil.

Personally, I have great memories of Master Carpenter who was an exceptional horse. After winning his debut at Leicester he proved to be a strong and durable colt who campaigned from 2013 - 2018, racing 53 times, achieving 7 wins and total earnings of £281,723. With a highest official rating of 110 it's no wonder he was purchased by Cheveley Park Stud and stands as a stallion March Hare Stud, Dorset.

I've followed Rod's two-year-olds back to 2006. Here are a few horses I remember over the years: Il Palio, Harvest Joy, El Bosque, Sauz D'Oulx, Brassini, Roi De Vitesse, Rosina Grey, Blackdown Fair, Maccabees, Yes Two, Blackdown Spirit, Dovil's Duel, Bonnie Grey, Marcano, Indaria, Handytalk, Airshow, Daddies Girl, Betty's Hope to name just a few.

Betty's Hope was a great filly for the Millman's. Who could forget her win in the Weatherby's Super Sprint Stakes (2019). A prize of £122,925, when collaring Show Me Show Me in the closing strides.

Last year's crop of two-year-olds saw Furlong Factor show plenty of class when winning once in seven starts and had a strong campaign. Furlong Factor ran two fine efforts at Listed class, especially her second in the Marygate Fillies' Stakes at York.

Crazy Luck caught the eye when winning well at Salisbury, a course the Millman's do exceptionally well.

Coul Kat won a couple of races by the skin of his teeth, showing a real battling quality.

Other winners included Toptime, Onaraggatip (a horse that will improve a lot this year), Four Adday (3yo) & Vitalline.

2yos for Flat Turf Season 2021

Amazonian Dream (Great Western Racing)

Bc Bungle Inthejungle – Grandmas Dream (16th Apr)

Half-brother to Windsor Castle 2nd Savannah’s Dream. Dam 5/6f winner and a half-brother to Group 3 6f 2yo winner Imperial Applause

A strong well-built colt that reminds us of our original Super Sprint winner Lord Kintyre. By a sire that produces tough speedy two-year-olds, one we are looking forward to in 2021.

Devon Envoy (Horniwinks Racing Syndicate)

Bg Peace Envoy – Favourite Girl (18th Apr)

Dam six-time 5/6f winner including at two and twice Listed runner-up at two, including in Redcar Two-Year-Old Trophy

The combination of a tough Ballydoyle two-year-old as his sire and a dam that ran eleven times as a juvenile should ensure he makes up into a tough sort and he has done everything right so far.

Forever Dreaming (JPM Racing II)

Chf Dream Ahead – Melrose Abbey (28 Feb)

Dam a dual 1m2f/1m4f winner at three. Full sister to Ceilidh House 10f Listed winner who has produced Listed winner Kinross and half-sister to four winners

A huge filly that already weighs in at 480kg, she has shown some speed befitting of her sire but as her pedigree suggests will likely be seen later in the season before showing her best at three.

Miss Anaco (Anaco Racing Partnership)

Bf Adaay – Sonko (12th Feb)

Full sister to 5f winner Four Adaay. Dam a six-time 5f winner at two and three, half-sister to 6f Listed 2yo winner Terror and 3 other winners.

Her year older sister had shown tremendous speed at two and we knew she was much better than the bare form (easy winner on her return at three) so we had to buy her for just 6,500gns. A sharper, more compact version of her sister, she should be an early sort.

Soi Dao (Daddies Girl Partnership)

Bf Twilight Son – Home Cummins (17th Apr)

Dam tough four-time winner, twice at two and third in 1m Listed. Half-sister to 7f 2yo winner and Group 2/3 winner Forest Ranger. Grand-dam 1m Listed winner

Unfortunately she got kicked in the paddock which took time to heal, so she started the breaking process around three months later than the rest. A compact filly, she should catch up and is from a tough family.

Twilight Tone (Crown Connoisseurs)

Bg Twilight Son – Bikini (18th Mar)

Half-brother to multiple sprint winners Tight Fit, John Kirkup, Kommander Kirkup and Kolossus. Grand-dam placed in Listed Company.

A big gelding from a sire that was a late developer and his first season stock followed suit before having a good end to the season. Likely to be one for mid-season onwards and will make up into a strong three-year-old

Twistaline (Mainline Racing)

Bf Showcasing – Tongue Twista (31st Jan)

Dam 2yo winner and placed in Group 2 Duchess of Cambridge, half-sister to four winners including 13-time winner Moody Tunes. Grand-dam debut 5f 2yo winner.

Early foal by a leading stallion in Showcasing, she should be one of our first two-year-olds to hit the track and is doing everything asked so far.

Whispering Winds (Book 3 Partnership & B R Millman)

Chf Buratino – Guthanna Gaoithe (6th Feb)

Dam placed over 1m, half-sister to 1m 2yo Listed winner Avenue Gabriel.

Solidly built chestnut filly that looks good value at 2,000gns. The sire was a winner in March before winning the Coventry on his sixth start, hopefully she can be out early and prove as tough as him.

Unnamed Bf Swiss Spirit – Apple Sauce (22nd Apr)

Half-brother to dual 7f 2yo winner Palawan, placed in Group 2/Listed Company and 13 time 5/6f winner Steelcut. Dam 5f winner and half sister to 5f Group 2 winner Sizzling Melody

A strong looking filly that has recently joined us and she is cantering away nicely. Has the size and pedigree to make up into a nice two-year-old

Unnamed (Canisbay Bloodstock) bf Territories – Plover (12th Feb)

Dam 7f 2yo winner for Sir Michael Stoute and half-sister to five winners. Granddam dual 1m Listed winner.

From a Juddmonte family with Territories injecting a bit of speed into the pedigree. She is progressing in her work and looks the type to make a two-year-old.

10 James Tate 2yos to Follow in 2020

James Tate has racing in his blood.

Holding a licence since 2011, his appointment to train privately for Rabbah Bloodstock was a game-changer.

A string of successful two-year-olds is the foundation of a quality yard and with nearly 400 winners the future looks brighter than ever.

Last season [2019] saw five very talented juveniles including the following:

Nasaiym

Racing in the ownership of Sheikh Juma Dalmook Al Maktoum. This bay daughter of More Than Ready went close to winning on debut before fending off Nina Bailarina at Newbury on her second start. The best of her four starts saw a creditable eighth place when contesting the Lowther Stakes (Group 2).

Dream Shot

This son of Dream Ahead had a busy formative season in the ownership of Rabbah Bloodstock. This bay colt ran nine times at two starting proceedings with a battling success at Goodwood when ridden by Jamie Spencer.

Jamesfield Place had big plans for this February foal and he didn't let the team down. The second start saw Dream Shot head to Beverley to contend the Brian YeardleyTwo Year Old Trophy Stakes (for colts and geldings). He finished a competitive third place behind Summer Sands. From there he was predominantly raced at pattern class, although dropped in class when winning ''comfortably'' at Chelmsford under a penalty.

  • 5th July, Sandown, 2nd Chase Farm Dragon Stakes (Listed Race)
  • 1st August, Goodwood, 7th Qatar Richmond Stakes (Group 2)
  • 24th August, York, 8th Julia Graves Roses Stakes (Listed Race)
  • 13th September, Doncaster, 2nd Wainwright Flying Childers Stakes (Group 2)
  • 18th October, Dundalk, 2nd Al Basti Equiworld Mercury Stakes (Group 3)
  • 1st November, Santa Anita (USA), 7th Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint (Grade 2)

Under The Stars

This bay daughter of Night Of Thunder out of a twice-winning mare raced six times in the ownership of Saeed Manana. This February foal made a sparkling debut at Ripon when ''soon clear, eased towards finish'' winning by three lengths.

She wasted no time tasting victory gaining Black Type when ''running on well'' to take the Princess Margaret Keeneland Stakes (Group 3) (Fillies) AT 25/1 Read James Tates quote about this victory. Other classy performances included

  • 22nd August, York, 4th Sky Bet Lowther Stakes (Group 2)
  • 15th September, Curragh, 5th Moyglare Stud Stakes (Group 1)
  • 27th September, Newmarket, 4th ShadwellRockfel Stakes (Group 2)
  • 5th October, Newmarket, 1st £150,000 Tattersalls October Auction Stakes

Melodic Charm

This chestnut filly, a daughter of Exceed And Excel, raced just two times in her two-year-old season but made a big impression for owner Saeed bin Suroor. This February foal was well fancied on debut at Wolverhampton when winning by three-quarters of a length at 2/1f.

The second start saw a creditable fourth place when beaten less than three lengths at Kempton contesting the Sun Racing Sirenia Stakes (Group 3).

Magical Journey

This chestnut filly raced just twice in her two-year-old career but showed a high level of ability for Saeed Manana. This daughter of Night Of Thunder ''kept on well'' after being held up the rear to win on debut at Beverley.

The second start saw her step up in class when runner-up at Newmarket when competing in the Irish Stallion Farms EBF ''Bosra Sham'' Fillies' Stakes (Listed Race).

I would like to thanks James for taking the time to forward 10 two-year-olds for 2020.

George Scott's 2yos to Follow in 2020

George Scott is a horse trainer who needs little introduction since launching his career at the end of 2015.

Based at Eve Lodge Stables, Newmarket, off Hamilton Road, he has made a favourable impression with the racing industry and punters alike.

Scott has made his name as a trainer of class horses including two-year-olds.

James Garfield won the Group 2 Mill Reef Stakes at Newbury and contended the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf, United States.

Racing at the highest class at three, this son of Exceed And Excel now stands as a stallion at Rathbarry Stud, Ireland.

George has been good enough to detail a few of his two-year-olds for the 2020 Flat season.

REVERENTIAL Lope De Vega filly out of Fifth Commandment. She was purchased at Deauville, France, for 160,000 euros from Arqana Sales in August 2019. She is bred by Ballylinch Stud. She's a physical type and her full-sister won first timeout. I think Lope De Vega is one of the best stallions that is accessible to most trainers. This filly is a forward type with a fantastic attitude. I hope she will be ready for early summer.

GEORGE PEABODY is a colt by Holy Roman Emperor out of Swordhalf from Tattersalls October Book 2 Yearling Sale. He was purchased from Stauffenberg Bloodstock. Now in the ownership of W J and T C O Gredley (90,000 gns). The mare was a champion two-year-old in Germany. He’s a lovely rangey colt with a very good action. He’s currently enjoying a break back at the stud to strengthen up. I do think he's going to be a lovely backend two-year-old and a particularly nice three-year-old for next year. He’s a flashy horse with a white face and moves very well.

GREAT VIBES is a homebred daughter of Showcasing out of Whazzat, which makes her a half-sister to James Garfield. He's a fantastic stallion, who had plenty of speed. She's very athletic, tall and leggy and finds life relatively easy at this stage. I’m looking forward to galloping with her in six weeks. She goes very well.

LATIFFA is a Kingman filly out of a mare called Lady Nouf, who was Listed-placed. I believe she was purchased at Tattersalls Book 2 for 72,000 gns. Wonder sire Kingman is quickly becoming one of the leading stallions in Europe. Latiffa is an excellent moving filly although she is from a late-maturing family so I don't think she will be out till later in the year. She does everything easy and she's a very pretty filly with a good constitution.

PERFECT COUNTRY is a filly by Australia out of Scarlet Empire and cost 40,000 euros from Goffs Yearling Sales. She's a huge grey filly with a long stride. She’s from the family of Sky Lantern. All she’s done is grown and she's still got plenty of maturing to do but I am confident she can be a lovely staying filly for next year.

PUNTA ARENAS is owned and bred by the Niarchos Family. He's by Quality Road out of a mare called Absolute Crackers. It’s pretty exciting to have a Quality Road colt. He's a fantastic sire in America and this is a very very good looking horse with a very good action. The mare was useful - she was rated in the 90s. I believe her first foal who ran last year is above average. This horse will be a nice middle-distance horse in time.

SMASH HIT (70,000 gns) is sired by Territories out of a mare called Sell Out who I believe was rated 109/110 mark and won a Listed race in France. She produced a couple of stakes horses and Territories is a stallion I thought made a lot of sense. This horse has quite a lot of Invincible Spirit in him. He's an easy-moving horse and very very good looking and goes well at home. He will be a nice summer two-year-old.

SIMULATION THEORY is a nice colt. He’s by Starspangledbanner typically out of a mare called Barawin and cost 30,000 gns. He's typical of the sire: chest out horse and huge long stride. I’ve been very pleased with his progress and he's an enormous horse and going to be a monster one day and a very easy-moving horse with a good attitude. He won't be ready until later in the summer but I think he's going to be a nice fast horse who will progress over the next year or so.

TEQUILA TEQUILA filly out of Tequila Sunrise, sired by Iffraaj. She's a half-sister to an unraced three-year-old in my yard who I like. She was a cheap purchase at 11,000 gns but goes very well. She's just started some light work and should be ready to run when the season starts.

BUNGLEDUPINBLUE is a filly sired by Bungle Inthejungle out of Generous Heart and cost £23,000 at the yearling sales. She's very sharp and would have run in the first two-year-old race of the season (Brocklesby Stakes). She goes nicely and has a really good attitude and I think she will be one who could be very competitive on debut.

Thank you, George. Have a great season and thanks for your support.

Charlie Fellowes' 2yos to Follow in 2020

Charlie Fellowes kindly talks through a few two-year-olds in his yard for the season ahead.

DEPUTY is a bay colt by Lawman (FR) out of Finagle (IRE) and owned by the Philip Blacker Syndicate. A £33,000 purchase out of unraced mare Finagle, his half-sister Nurse Barbra is 101 rated after three promising runs for Ger Lyons last season.

Charlie's view: ''A nice horse and should be one of my first 2yr olds to run. Good attitude and looks like a nice type.''

ANGEL AMADEA is a grey filly by Dark Angel (IRE) out of Keene Dancer (GB) and owned by Graham Smith-Bernal. A £55,000 purchase out of the previously owned Michael Stoute Keene Dancer who won a couple of times in average races over a mile in 2012.

Charlie's view: ''Very immature but has a lovely way of going. She has been turned out to grass but all her homework before then had been eye-catching. One for the end of the year.''

An UNNAMED chestnut colt by NIGHT OF THUNDER (IRE) out of MATHANORA (IRE). The colt was purchased for 85,000 gns and is owned by Mr Mohamed Obaida.

Charlie's view: ''Probably my pick of the colts. Lovely big athletic type. Very straightforward and his routine work has been lovely. One for the 2nd half of the season.''

JUSTICIALISM bay colt by VADAMOS (FR) out of unraced PERONISM (USA). The colt was purchased for 60,000 gns and is owned by Mr. Mohamed Obaida.

Charlie's view: ''Good looking colt but big and backward. Would be the type to have a couple of runs at the end of the year but should make a nice 3yr old.''

GEORGE SCOTT (IRE) is a bay colt by Zoffany (IRE) out of African Plains (GB). The colt was purchased for 20,000 gns at the October Sales last year and is owned by Offthebridle Podcast. Had to put this one in with a great name like this!

Charlie's view: ''Very good looking and his work has been nice. Has developed a habit of going up on his hind legs recently so is going to be gelded tomorrow. Carries a lot of condition but I like him.''

SHERRY BABY (IRE) is a bay filly by Nathaniel (IRE) out of Disclose (GB). The filly is owned by Mrs. Susan Roy and is a half-sister to the 102 rated Hugo Palmer gelding Encrypted who won the Golden Rose Listed Stakes at Lingfield in 2018.

Charlie's view: ''Not moved to my yard yet as she has been in pre-training. Very immature from what I have been told and would be one for the end of the year.''

TALLULAH (IRE) chestnut filly by Sea The Stars (IRE) out of Ninas Terz (GB). The filly is owned by Mrs. Susan Roy and a sister to the Roger Charlton filly Fashion’s Star.

Charlies View: ''Another very immature filly. Again this one hasn’t been to my yard yet but she is in Newmarket so I have seen her a few times. Lots of quality but wouldn’t be a surprise if she didn’t run this year.''

WANNABE SAFE (IRE) is a bay filly by Oasis Dream (GB) out of Wannabe Posh (IRE) and owned and bred by Normandie Stud Ltd.

Charlie's view: ''Very attractive filly with lots of quality. It should be sharp but won't be early. Has been turned out for a holiday and will come back in once we know more about the resumption of racing. Like her a lot.''

FIRST CONNECTION (FR) is a chestnut colt by Gleneagles (IRE) out of Vendetta (IRE) and owned by Mrs. Susan Roy.

Charlie's view: ''A Gleneagles colt who seems to go nicely. Still very narrow and immature, but a lovely mover and finds everything pretty easy. One for the end of the year.''

Vadream filly by Brazen beau (AUS) out of HER HONOUR (IRE) and owned by Mr. D.R.J. King.

Charlie's view: ''Probably be my first 2yo runner if everything goes to plan. Strong, well-made filly with lots of quality. She is as quick as any 2yr old filly I have ever had (wouldn't be a long list!).''

First Prophet bay colt by NEW BAY (GB) out of LUS GREINE (IRE).

Charlie's view: ''An attractive colt from the first crop of New Bay. Along with the Night of Thunder he has been catching my eye the most. It should be a midseason 2yr old type and looks nice at this stage.''
