Equinefutures banged in another winner last week with Hooflepuff for the team. I'd like to claim a winner with my selection Yorkshire Terrier but I can't really as the Johnston 2yo was a non runner but won the next day, pretty much sums up my luck at the moment. No 2yo racing today so I'm sitting it out and waiting for better days to come.
17.00 Yarmouth Ostilio 13/8 3rd
Just been through the most dire card at Wolves thinking possibly Candy’s one in the 700 is potentially better than these but obv can’t know. Was honestly considering the 800 which is the seller Johnston’s Dark Comp? (Loughnane and Caroll also do well in sellers). Proper scraping the barrel!!!
Had a look at Yarmouth and this caught the eye so go with it for the IITWI nap!!
500 YAR – OSTILIO needs some leap of faith as it has been running below par for some time. Originally claimed from Archie Watson’s yard with a mark of 93, Ostilio was campaigned by current trainer without success until an out of the blue win over this course and distance in June ’22 (Class 4, off 76). Running on the sand since then (bar an early Epsom appearance) that mark is now 57 and the hope is that quickly turned out, on a return to favourable conditions and with ‘The Kid’ on board, connections are expecting a return to form.
15.20 Yarmouth FAUSTUS 9/2 8th
Looks an interesting one here on reappearance and particularly a value play at an early show of 6/1 with one firm and I will be hoping for something similar to an each way play. Clearly goes well when fresh, having won on his run back last season and the year previous, a close up 4th.
He returns here off a mark of 80 here and that is well within range, now 1lb lower than the latest which was the reappearance win from last season albeit on the AW where his best form has come, plenty of turf form entitles him to respect in this.
This drop in his mark enables him into this C4 event, having run predominantly in C3 events last season. This is his first effort back in a C4 since that win.
He has won on ground described as soft, perhaps more on the easy side of good in the summer months though not far off the current good to soft, soft in places at Yarmouth albeit with rain forecast overnight followed by a mostly sunny day.
Multiple times he has been a non runner due to unsuitably good to firm ground so this may well be the time to catch him with the record he has fresh and the ground as it is.
The man JP Spencer returns for the ride and he was onboard for that last win. Everything to my eye points to a big run. Yard have had a couple of recent winners, and though they run two including the early markup favourite, this one certainly appeals more to me at the weights, for this combo having recently teamed up for a winner.
4.30 Yarmouth: Concierge 4/1 5th
Not a particularly competitive race. Phoenix Star and Concierge are the obvious interests for me, having caught the eye in their last runs. In saying that, high draws have a poor record over this course and distance and PS is perhaps better over the minimum trip, especially on turf.
Concierge's record over 6f isn't brilliant, either. However, he has won over the trip on good to soft in the past. He also looks ready for a big run here: I was impressed by his comeback run last month at Kempton, where he was a serious eye catcher as he showed multiple accelerations from id-race on to finish the fastest for the last 4 furlongs.
He couldn’t follow-up at Chelmsford, but travelling wide throughout, chasing the pace, was the reason why he dropped out badly in the closing stages.
As a consequence, he's down another couple of pounds, a new career-lowest. He ran to a 64 speed rating at Kempton, though, suggesting there's enough there to believe he can win. He drops to class 6 today - obviously he's not the force of old, but this is much easier than anything he's encountered even in the more recent past.
Thanks for reading and good luck.
