Two & Three Year Old Eye Catchers (4th July)

Been slacking with the eye catchers but have been going through my trackers to see what caught the eye. I imagine a few will be short prices but still interested to see how they run this season all the same. 

ANGEL AMADEA 24 June Newmarket 

It’s been a long wait to see the William Haggas trained Angel Amadea make her racecourse debut but the Dark Angel filly certainly looks worth watching out for next time. Angel Amadea was purchased at the Goffs 2019 Premier Yearling Sale for £55.000 and was expected to make her debut towards the end of last year. I don’t expect much of a price as I imagine she went into many notebooks but a winner is a winner hey. Angel Amadea is owned by Graham & Marcela Smith-Bernal and made her belated debut at Newmarket at the end of June and was unfancied that day when sent off a 14/1 shot. Tom Marquand gave her time to settle and was kept towards the back after a slow start and then Tom eased her into the race before giving her a nudge, Angel Amadea then made steady progress on the front two right until the line. I would expect the three-year-old to be a lot more clued-up next time out. 

ANTIPHON 13 April Newmarket 

The Andrew Balding trained Kodiac bay colt is another who made a promising debut at Newmarket back in April in what was a race that has a bit of substance about it, four winners have come out of it including the sixth that day Ebro River who won the the National Stakes at Sandown. Owned by familiar owner Mr George Strawbridge who has had a few decent horses over the years. Trainer Andrew usually leaves a bit to work on with his 2-year-olds and are normally better for the run, Interesting Antiphon attracted support from 7s into 11/2 that day. Another who wasn’t given a hard time on debut and I will be surprised if Antiphon isn’t in the winners enclosure soon. Not sure why we haven’t seen the Kodiac colt since making his debut back in April.

ALAROOS 25 June Curragh 

Hopefully a better price this one after finishing sixth in her opening race in Ireland. Alaroos has a great pedigree being by Golden Horn and a half-sister to Madhmoon who was also under the guidance of Alaroos trainer Kevin Prendergast. The Shadwell homebred was a big price on debut and it showed when running around for most of the race until finding her feet the last couple of furlongs and staying on past beaten horses. The winner Discoveries and the second Tuesday are well-thought of, so I would expect an improved performance next time out. 

ANCHORAGE 3 July Naas 

I did have a small bet on this Aidan O’Brien colt because he is well-thought of at Ballydoyle but as always 2-year-olds on debut you just never know how they will run. Dam Vanzara was unraced. Pretty solid in the market on debut and hovered around the 5/2 mark. I imagine this Galileo colt will be the best horse in the race despite not winning today. Anchorage was settled in midfield for most of the way and looked to be going nowhere until getting the hang of things and showing his best work in the closing stages when staying on well. I Imagine a step up in trip will show improvement and a win should be sooner rather than later.
