Umm Kulthum Wins at Thirsk in Bizarre Betting Heat

4:30 Thirsk -

I didn't take too much interest in this race but couldn't help notice the bizarre betting market on Betfair.

Richard Fahey's two-year-olds have started to kick into form after a slow start to the season but these last two weeks we've seen something of a purple patch.

Umm Kulthum was well backed from big prices (12/1) this morning but taking a closer look at this daughter of Kodiac's market graph showed bets that defied belief.

Whether someone made a mistake or luckily inspired, a couple of significant bets were placed at odds shorter than 1/2, which is surprising when returning an SP of 100/30.

However, the uncertainty didn't stop there after this £75,000 2yo Breeze-Up purchase was slow away from the stalls and touched odds of 44 in running. She knuckled down in fine style in the closing furlong and collard 6/4f Digital on the line.

Whether someone made a mistake betting at prohibitive odds or not, it was all smile by the line as she won in comfortable fashion by half a length.

Even more bizarre was the fact that Umm Kulthum finished so fast that the market didn't have time to respond and one of the last bet laid was at 44.

Umm Kulthum looks a very good horse in the making and race comments said: Dwelt start, soon in midfield, pushed along 2f out, ridden over 1f out, ran green but headway inside final furlong, swerved left final 110yds, kept on strongly, led towards finish, promising (op 5/2).

We will be hearing about this April foal in the ownership of Saeed Bin Mohammed Al Qassimi.

Exciting times.
