Five Marco Botti Two-Year-Olds (2yos) for the Flat Season 2021

Marco Botti kindly talks through a few two-year-olds in his yard for the season ahead.

COSTA SMERALDA – Grey filly by sire Outstrip who won the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf back in 2013 and out of eleven-year-old mare Magika who was a decent type back in her day also trained by Marco Botti. Magika visited the winning enclosure four times winning a couple of nice handicaps along the way for Marco. Costa Smeralda comes from a decent family and is a half-sister to the Marco Botti trained Malotru who made his debut at Chelmsford in 2019. Malotru must have been flying on the gallops as the money was down, and he was sent off the even money favourite that day and duly obliged before going onto win a Group 2 on his next start in Milan, with the winter behind and a year older Malotru certainly improved again and ran a cracker to finish third in the Group 1 Prix Jean Prat in Deauville when finishing third to brilliant Pinatubo. The signs are good for Costa Smeralda and it will be interesting to see the market when she makes it onto the racetrack this season.

Marco’s view, “She is not very big, looks to be racy and showing speed. Related to Malotru and we like her. All being well she will run May/June time”.

ARAMCO – 2019 colt by Sea The Moon and out of Her Honour. Mare Her Honour never really achieved much in her short career for Cheveley Park and John Gosden. Aramco was purchased for 90,000 gns at the yearling sales and is owned by Mr S. R Chua, a half-brother to French colt Mirage Hero who has a couple of wins to his name also a half-brother to the Charlie Fellowes trained Vadream who Charlie described in last years trainer post as one of his quickest 2-year-olds he's ever had, and he wasn’t wrong when Vadream won a shade cosily in her only race of the 2020 season.

Marco’s view, “He is a nice type, he’s a strong and compact 2yo and looks to be more a 7f type at this stage”.

ODISSEO –A 26,000 gns purchase by Marco Botti at the Tatt Sales and owned by Blueberry R & Boyer Boyer. Mare Atalis won a couple of times in France early on in her career and has produced a nice offspring in the name of Atalis Bay also trained by Marco Botti. The Cable Bay colt was well-thought of by Marco and after rattling off a hat trick of victories Atalis Bay finished down the field in the Group 3 Cornwallis Stakes at Newmarket which was no disgrace at that level. Looking forward to this unnamed colt making his debut and another who will be worth a market check on debut.

Marco’s View “We like him and he is doing everything right at home. He is related to a sprinter and we are looking to start him over 6-7f”.

MASTER OF COLOURS – This unnamed colt comes from an impressive family of winners so it will be no surprise to see this Muhaarar colt in the winners enclosure this season. A half-brother to Joseph Patrick O'Brien trained Speak In Colours who started his career with Marco. Speak In Colours raced at a decent level winning some nice group races including the 60,000 euro Group 3 Phoenix Stakes at Curragh as a 3-year-old. Lady Bowthorpe is another offspring who ran at a decent level winning the Group 3 Valiant Stakes at Ascot last year for trainer William Jarvis, the third offspring is the Marco Botti trained Pretty In Grey who won three nice handicaps on the bounce as a 3-year-old last year and ended the season finishing third in a Listed race at Dundalk. The signs are good and it’s worth keeping in mind all have improved with age.

Marco’s View, “Very good family related to three black type performers. Much to like and looks to be a mid-summer type”.

Another Marco Botti 2-year-old to look out for this season:

BULLISH - 35,000 gns purchase and a half-brother to Marco’s Fanciful Angel and the Roger Varian trained Mountain Angel both nice types. This colt is in the ownership of Middleham Park Racing.
