Trainers Talk 2-Year-Olds - Edward Bethell

New trainer on the block Edward Bethell has big stirrups to fill this year after taking over the reins from his legendary father James; I say new kid but racing was in his blood from an early age and it’s not like he’s just been thrown in at the deep end. Edward grew up around his family’s Thorngill Stables in Middleham, North Yorkshire, a place rich with history. After a couple of spells as assistant trainer in his early years, Edward became assistant to Charlie Hills in 2016 and most recently Robert Cowell. I’m pretty sure the Yorkshire trainer will be just as successful as his father James who won plenty of big races over his 46 years in the game.

Edward has kindly forwarded a number of two-year-olds to follow this flat season 2021. We thank him kindly for taking the time and wish the stable all the best for this season and happy retirement to his father James.

Havana Gold (IRE)

Coolminx (IRE)

Owned by Clarendon Thoroughbred Racing and a half-brother to Cool Team

“This colt is very straightforward and looks to me as if he will be one of my earlier types, he is out of a fast black type two year old so I see no reason why he won’t be early. Although he looks to have enough size to possibly go on to be a three year old.”

Churchill (IRE)

Come with me (GB) Owned by Mr G van Cutsem & Partners

“Very straightforward, precocious type. He is all there and I am really happy with his progress, he should be starting off in April/May time.”

Ribchester (IRE)

Surface of Earth (USA) Owned by Clarendon Thoroughbred Racing

“Lovely moving horse, great stride and mind on him. He is not so sharp, he will be more of a backend type, he is doing a lot of growing at the moment, he is a horse to look forward to towards the end of the year.”

Ulysses (IRE)

Last Jewel Owned by Mr J Carrick & Mr S Taylor

“Smashing colt, he is a great mover, very well built and one that I am excited about. He will not be an early two year old, more later developing and we will probably see the best of him in his three/four year old season.”

Gleneagles (IRE)

Hairspray (GB)

Owned by Mr R Vickers and Mr D Vickers

“Nice colt, who is doing everything right, he moves well and is very forward mentally and physically. I like him a lot, he won’t be rushed at all, I would like to think he will be a mid-summer two year old who should give his owners a lot of fun.”

The Gurkha (IRE)

Sharaarah (IRE)

Owned by Mr G van Cutsem & Partners

“Small, compact filly who is built like a colt. She is a half sister to the yard favourite Moss Gill, although The Gurkha wouldn’t imply speed she is showing a lot of speed in her work, although early days she looks precocious!”

Due Diligence (USA)

Last Supper (GB)

Owned by Mr R Gibbons “Small, slight filly with a bit of filling out to do at the moment. She is in full work and is coming along really nicely. She won’t grow a great deal so I would imagine she will be out early.”

Aclaim (IRE)

Feint (GB)

“Nice compact filly bought cheaply with the GBB bonus scheme in mind. She is all there at the moment and I think she looks like she will be an early sort.”

Filly Highland Reel (IRE) Lady Canford (IRE) Owned by Mr Richard Nolan

“A sweet filly, who is growing a lot at the moment, she is very up behind. In her work she moves nicely and I am happy with her progress but I think she is one for the later part of the year, possibly a three-year-old campaign.”

Garswood (GB)

Winters Night (IRE)

Owned by Mr D W Armstrong

“Lovely big filly, with a great stride on her. She is an imposing filly to look at. Her work has been good and I am looking forward to her work stepping up in the spring.”

Garswood (GB)

Highleaf (GB)

Owned by Mr D W Armstrong

“A sweet filly with plenty of size. She is also a good mover. I think she will be the more forward of the two Garswood fillies I have.”

Charming Thought (GB)

Mary Read (GB)

“She is still in Pre-training at the moment.”
