Qatar’s 2yo Stars: Owners Selections for 2021

Thanks to Adam Brookes, Racing Analyst and Bloodstock Assistant for David Redvers Bloodstock Ltd, for taking the time to forward the following two-year-old prospects for the 2021 season.

ELECTRESS filly by Galileo x Just The Judge

Trainer, Ralph Beckett

She has already had to show lots of character as we lost her dam (a dual Gr.1 winner) shortly after she’d foaled and she was raised by a non-thoroughbred foster mare. Just The Judge’s first two foals are winners and it will be special to see this filly on track as she’ll be the first of them to carry the Qatar Racing silks, as her dam did. It’s unlikely she’ll be out in the first half of the season but she’s a lovely scopey filly, very well balanced, and will hopefully be worth waiting for.

FRANKLIN WILLIAM colt by Frankel x Kiyoshi

Trainer, Andrew Balding

He’ll carry the colours of Sheikh Fahad’s wife Sheikha Melissa Al Fahad, which have already been seen in the winners’ enclosure several times through Kuiper Belt. His trainer also sent out his half-brother Iron Heart to win twice. This lad is a lovely big horse who moves well, covers plenty of ground and has a very straightforward attitude. We are pleased with his progress so far.

SUNSTRIKE filly by Dark Angel x Extricate

Trainer, John Gosden

Has only been with her trainer a few weeks so it’s very early days but she looked a good-moving, athletic filly with a straightforward temperament when broken in by Tim Rusbridge, who has broken in plenty of Qatar Racing’s youngsters near Tweenhills (including Roaring Lion and Kameko). She’s a half-sister to two Stakes-winning fillies with a speedy pedigree so let’s hope she could be a Royal Ascot type.

SHADOWFAX colt by Galileo x Golden Valentine

Trainer, John Gosden

You are unlikely to see this lad before the back-end of the season but he’s a rangy sort with a good attitude and, like another good horse we had with John Gosden, he’s a grey. He gets his colour from his dam Golden Valentine who won two Stakes races over a mile and a half, which tells you all you need to know regards trip for this colt. He cost €450,000 so naturally we have high hopes. We also have exciting colts by Frankel out of Simple Verse and Dubawi out of Wekeela with John this year – it’s just too early to judge levels of ability.

WOLSEY colt by Kitten’s Joy x Justaroundmidnight

Trainer, Andrew Balding

By Kameko’s sire and also with Andrew Balding – let’s hope lightning can strike twice! Like most we’ve had by the stallion, he’s a lovely straightforward colt with a ‘can do’ attitude towards his work and just wants to please. He had a growth spurt after arriving from the US and therefore may well need time; his trainer has only had him a few weeks so no buttons will have been pressed yet.

EMOTION filly by Frankel x Molly Malone

Trainer, John Gosden

While her dam won her Gr.1 over two and a half miles on heavy ground in the Prix du Cadran, she has already produced a Gr.2 winner over a mile and a quarter in Morgan Le Faye. Clearly, this filly is going to be more of a 3-year-old but she has always been a pleasure to deal with, is strong with a good shoulder and has proven active enough to think we should see her on track this year.

KICKBOX colt by Dabirsim x Rich Legacy

Trainer, Michael Bell

He had a reputation at Tweenhills for being a bit of a boy, and he’s a very strong type without being overly big. He was actually straightforward to back according to Tim, and his trainer reports that he’s made excellent progress since joining him, describing him as a “bonny horse”. His sire was an unbeaten Gr.1-winning 2-year-old and his dam won the Gr.2 May Hill Stakes so we’re entitled to dream.

OHEKA filly by Kodiac x Qatar Power

Trainer, William Haggas

She’s likely to be one of our first runners having been with William since mid-November. She has been cantering on the grass and done plenty of bone conditioning. Her dam won her Listed race over a mile at 3 but this filly is strong and neat and is probably one to be cracking on with.

OUTBREAK colt by Dark Angel x Purr Along

Trainer, Mark Johnston

After buying Rose of Kildare mid-way through last season, Qatar Racing has sent Mark Johnston two Dark Angel juvenile colts this year (the other is out of Sea of Grace) and they are hard to split. Both are reportedly well, cantering routinely and have had several upsides canters so far, so we’re expecting to see them out in the first few months of the season. This lad’s dam was a dual Gr.3 winner and her son Starcat ran in last year’s QIPCO 2,000 Guineas after his winning debut.

CUBAN BEAT filly by Havana Gold x Stroll Patrol

Trainer, Hugo Palmer

Hugo trained the first foal out of the mare, Hot Touch (by Hot Streak), to win in the July of her 2-year-old year before contesting Stakes races and he’s already a fan of this filly. He’s delighted with her; she’s very natural, extremely strong, moves well and is a really lovely stamp of a filly who looks strong enough and forward enough to make a good 2-year-old. The dam also won in the July of her juvenile year and was placed in the Gr.3 Dick Poole Stakes.

Good luck to Qatar for this 2021 Flat season. Exciting times.
