Punter Bets Couple of Grand at 1.01 (Before the race has started)

You never know what you will see on the betting exchanges. One person's nightmare of a bet is another one's delight.

It's the nature of the beast.

We've all had good and bad bets. And sometimes mistakes happen. That's probably the score with one unlucky punter who probably meant to put up a bet to lay Driftwood at 1.01 and backed it instead!

Take a look at the screen capture and see what I mean. £5,217 at 1.01. The original bet of about £2,500. It may be the case it's a blip or something spurious but who knows.

The numbers are there to be seen.

The 5:30 Southwell has been a race of changing fortunes because Archie Watson's Mehmento, who won by over 9-lengths on debut over course and distance was a priced at prohibitive odds, in fact 1/5f.

Punters thinking about opposing the favourite found they were betting odds on when this son of Mehmas was declared a non runner. For good measure, Saray Prince, trained by Julia Feilden, was sidelined.

Next thing, Driftwood, trained by Scott Dixon is the new favourite and surprise (deja vu) it's a 1/5f. Which doesn't say too much about the race when this three-year-old on its seventh start has an official rating of 62. To be fair to this daughter of Footstepsinthesand, she has finished second on her last three starts and won almost four thousand in prize money. This may well be her day. With just three runners left, connections will be pleased with a win prize of £3,429. While the other two horses will be putting money in the bank whether top, middle or bottom.

The unlucky punter who had the misfortune to back a couple of grand at 1.01 will be hoping and praying Driftwood gets her head in front to win £25.

I hope for their sake the favourite wins.

Good luck to all.
